Understanding the Game of Rugby
Rugby, at present, is one of the most exciting contact sports. Rugby combines football and soccer in that it is a hard-hitting physical game like football, and a game of speed and movement, like soccer.
The ball used in rugby are almost the same as a football in terms of size and shape. Comparing the size of rugby balls and footballs, one can say that a rugby ball is larger than a football. The modern version of the rugby balls have no laces. There are mandatory and options personal equipment that a rugby player need like a mouthpiece, which is mandatory, and a soft-padded head gear, which is optional.
Rugby is played on a large playing field called the ‘pitch.’ This is a large grassy surface which measure 100 meters long and 70 meters wide. There are uprights positioned on every end of the rugby field. The goal area is behind the uprights. The minimum depth of the goal area is 10 meters but it is often 22 meters.
Two teams are represented in the pitch who will play the game. Each team fields in fifteen players for the game. The packs and the backs makes up a team. The jersey number of pack players are from one to eight. Pack players are made up of the larger, more physical players. The backs have jersey numbers from nine to fifteen, and made up of the fastest players.
Teams’ objective is to score a ‘try’ or a goal. You can achieve a try by touching the ball down inside your opponent’s end zone. There is no particular player that can carry the ball to the zone to make a score. If you make a try, 5 points is awarded to you. A conversion kick is then awarded to a player who makes a try. IF he is successful with his kick, 2 more points are added to the score.
A ‘drop goal’ is another way of scoring. A drop goal is rewarded with three points. If the ball is kicked through the uprights of the opposing team then you have a drop goal. To make a drop goal the ball should make contact with the ground first before you kick it.
If there are fouls on players, penalty kicks are also granted. Penalty kicks are worth 3 points. A penalty kick is taken where the foul was committed behind the 22 meter line.
